Tiny Hong Kong Apartment Lives Large

Think your home is working double duty to meet all your needs? Well, Gary Chang, a Hong Kong architect has figured out how to make his miniscule apartment work triple, quadruple, even quintuple duty! This video is so cool, that I had to watch it a couple times to enjoy all the goodness it has to offer.

Watch the video and share your favorite living space hack. I’m kind of partial to the mirrors on the ceiling bed that folds down over the bathtub.

My four-year-old says he wishes this were our house. When I asked him where he would put all his toys, he said he would pull out a wall and put them in a secret drawer.

Wow! Not that it compares, but watching this I felt really nostalgic for Japanese houses/apartments. Rooms there have sliding doors that can be opened to connect rooms or separate them as needed. Futons are not what we call ‘futahns’ here, but rather just thin matresses on the floor that are meant to be folded and stored in the closets during the day. Also it’s normal not to have much in the way of living room furniture–cushions on the floor and a short-legged table instead of sofa, recliners, end tables, etc. Many people also use their living room as a bedroom and a dining room. It’s so nice to have space less permanently defined, not to mention the savings of heating and cooling because you can spend all your time in one room!

Wow! Really ingenious use of his space. Both my husband and I feel we have too much stuff. We gave so much stuff away when we sold our suburban home, but we still own too much. What’s left are my husband’s tools, mementos made by our children, books, cd’s and several dvd’s and lots of kitchen stuff. We aren’t comfortable giving those away for the moment, and I have come to respect that intuition. I have regretted giving away some items, when my intuition has told me otherwise. But most of the stuff we gave away was a blessing.

I saw this the other day and was very impressed!

This is my fantasy, to live in a small, efficient, uncluttered space. Every house we’ve lived in has gotten smaller and smaller, but I still would like less space and less stuff. I’m not too sure my family would agree, but hey, it’s my fantasy, not theirs!

Real Simple magazine has an article this month about a couple living in less than 400 sq. feet. Again, very impressive.
