Today I Am . . .

Today I am . . .

Geeking out and singing along to a Pandora station based on Captain and Tenille’s Muskrat Love. It’s all 1970’s Carpenters, Elton John, Stevie Wonder and similar elevator-worthy songs. I am old and I am embracing it. (I somehow know every word of every song!)

Playing solitaire with a deck of cards I bought in 1987 from a London newsstand right before going on a three day trip to Edinburgh. They are perfectly worn in.

Planning a dinner of glazed ham and Costa Rican style rice and beans. Each year my employer gives me a gift certificate for a “turkey or ham” and I’ve been choosing the ham the last couple of years. Hello . . . spiral ham!!!

Enjoying the memory of having my family over for a belated Christmas dinner last night. We feasted on a vegetarian burrito bar with ginger snaps for dessert. We played a raucous game of Apples to Apples and had a thoroughly enjoyable and low stress evening.

Thinking I should do a big Goodwill donation run before the 31st.

Preparing yummy meals and snacks for my son and his friend who are holed up playing FIFA 13 all day.

Planning out an article challenging people to participate in the buy-nothing-new Compact for 2014.

Now your turn. What are you doing today?

Today I am:

1. At the end of a 3 day drive from Colorado to S. Carolina with my husband after a very fun family Christmas visit with all 3 of our grown kids.

2. Keeping track of college bowl games because I entered a “pool” to win money – and half of what you win goes to the charity of your choice, which I love.

3. Sad because I learned that my daughter’s job is ending next week, which we knew was a possibility, but sad also the stress this has been causing for her. She has been doing an excellent job of being on her own in a city far from home with no help from her parents.

4. Looking forward to using a gift card to go out to dinner tomorrow night to celebrate our 28th anniversary. And they said it wouldn’t last…ha! ha!

All the food sounds wonderful. And go for it on that Goodwill donation run. I devoted part of yesterday afternoon to making this round: I took books to my favorite local secondhand book store for credit; I took clothes/shoes to the local branch of Clothes Mentor for cash; and I dropped off all the rejects at the nearest Rescue Mission store.

I am brainstorming possible goals for 2014. I have a surprisingly long list and plan to spend a few days trying to picture the coming year. What would I like to say I’ve done at the end of next year?

I am also putting together a box to take to Goodwill in the coming days, though I may try and sell some of the books first.

My six year old and I worked some more on the Lego Apple Tree house he got for Christmas, garage door went in today.

And lastly I am starting to meal plan for our New year’s Eve camping trip. We thought we would try something new this year, just going to a nearby State Park that has lots of good hiking. It will also give me a chance to practice riding my “new” bike. At Thanksgiving I rec’d my mother-in-law’s bike that she is unable to ride anymore. A little cleaning up and it looks great. The best part is the 3 baskets on it and my husband got me a bell for Christmas.

1. Had to work today…but now it’s Friday! Yay!
2. You’ve inspired me to start asap (tomorrow morning) to start going through boxes we’ve stored away while remodeling and find at least 50% to take to Goodwill or garage sale.
3. Cleaning out leftovers from 2 fridges and finding ways to use any and all leftovers or nearly ready to have to be disposed of food.
4. LOL! Absolutely no insult intended, because I totally love your geeking out style and will borrow your idea while sorting those boxes…BUT, my top # 1 least liked song is…Muskrat Love! Sorry…
How do you feel about Buddy Holly?

Buddy Holly grew up in the town I live in now. There is a museum downtown, and a statue of him in the “Musicians Walk of Fame ” near the Civic Center.

The charitable donation runs are an excellent idea any time of year, but particularly now. Be sure to get a receipt for (dreaded) tax return.

My little sister didn’t believe it was a real song, which is why we put it on. *Not* because I’m a fan of the song!

And of course, Buddy Holly is fun!

The Goodwill/other donation run is an excellent idea. Be sure to get receipts, in order to itemize on (dreaded) tax return.

Already did my donation run last month.
I cleaned out or really organized the leftovers in the fridge.
Froze a bozenberry pie, hopefully it makes it out okay
I’m going to make the house smell wonderful today cooking turkey soup, had a 20 lb turkey my daughter got for $5 the day after thanksgiving.
Husband was sad there wasn’t much in leftover turkey, but after feeding 13 people and said daughter taking home leftover turkey, we’ll have to make do with soup.
Was going to take the tree down, but it’s still fresh enough to leave for a coupla days.
Playing solitare sounds good. Haven’t done that in ages!

Thank God for FIFA ’13 – my two sons (14 and 17) couldn’t be less alike in their hobbies, interests and temperaments. But they will play FIFA together for HOURS. To me, it is a beautiful thing.
