Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow

Yesterday we said goodbye to our Japanese exchange students. Although they only stayed with us for six days, we really got to know these two kids.

All host families received a $25-per-kid stipend, which was unusual. Another mother insisted that I accept her money to go towards my sons’ class trips to Japan. Such a lovely gesture.

Today I received a hand-me-down copy of The Pioneer Woman’s cookbook in the mail from a blog reader. This, I think, was the fourth time that readers have mailed gifts to me. Such lovely gestures.

Tomorrow I work all day, as does my husband. As a result, my kids will have to get themselves off to school on their own. As a backup in case my younger son misses his school bus, my neighbors will be able to drive him to school. Such a lovely gesture.

Sounds like a positive week. I just had my first reader send me a gift, which was about 15 pounds of walnuts, from Portland! We’ve really been enjoying them, and it was such a nice surprise. I hope you enjoy your cookbook!

My husband and I are building a small cabin on the land we purchased for retirement. After we build the house the cabin will be our garden shop, extra storage, etc. Trying to find cheap apartment size appliances has been a real challenge. I’m not paying $650 for a 24″ stove just because it’s so cute (salesperson’s description).
So, thanks to your blog Katy, I decided to just be patient and keep looking for used appliances. In the meantime we’ll use our coleman camping stove.

Katy – I’ve been reading through your blog for several weeks now since I found it. You do a great job and I’m really enjoying going back through everything you’ve written. Keep up the great work – you’ve inspired me to rethink all my choices and I’m slowly using less new, more old, and not getting things that I really don’t need and will only clutter my life (and home!).

Hooray for lovely gestures from friends and neighbors! I recently received a free dozen red roses (friend’s neighbor was going on vacation and didn’t want them to go to waste) and six pears (friend was a gift recipient, and doesn’t like pears). In both cases, something valuable that would have gone to waste instead was put to good use and made someone else happy. Now trying to pay it forward!

What a bunch of lovely things. 🙂
I’m jealous of the cookbook – I love her new show on the Food Network.

Enjoy the cook book! If you haven’t made it before, you must make the chocolate sheet cake – it’s amazing! That page is probably a little sticky, it has been used lots 😉
