I drove my Japanese host son to the airport yesterday morning for an early morning flight, and decided to stop into Ikea to scope out their butcher block for the kitchen island I am designing. (Both Ikea and the airport are a bit of a schlep from the house, so it’s good to batch these errands.)
Unfortunately, Ikea doesn’t open until 10:00 A.M., (although they do open the cafeteria and showrooms earlier.) I sat in the car, watching the wind whip the flags around and started to wish that I’d had the foresight to bring my laptop along for the ride. I then realized that I had a spiral notebook in the car, so I started to write a to-do list, notes for blog ideas, and a first draft for a column. Time passed quickly, and I realized that the parking lot was filling up, so I brought my notebook into the store and ordered one of their 99¢ breakfasts and enjoyed some delicious free coffee.
I continued writing until the store officially opened and then tucked my notebook under my arm and made my way over to the butcher block area. I spoke with the salesperson, made notes on sizes and prices and then performed a look-see though the seconds department.
No fuss, no muss, 99¢ breakfast. And my iPad was bought for 10¢ during the summer’s school supply sales.
Who else needs a ride to the airport?

Love that IKEA! I’m usually on my way to said airport to fly home so can’t buy much, buy really enjoy looking at all the stuff with that great Scndinavian sense of design.
I love notebooks. I keep one in my purse at all times (a little smaller than the one in your picture) because, even tho’ I do often make notes on my iphone, it is sometimes more satisfying to write things out. Besides, it allows me to practice my penmanship…something that has really gone south since the advent of laptops, iphones and ipads.
Good to see your still here! 🙂
Glad you had your quite time… and remembered your Ipad!
HOpe you found what you were looking for in Ikea.
We have one about 15 mins from me. its always a crazy zoo there! I couldn’t tell you the last time I was there….
Nice to see you posting!

Love this post, made me grin!!
hehe… Absolutley.
Katy,
Several years ago, I saw Bette Midler interviewed on a late night talk show. She was explaining how her fans would send her daughter all kinds of lavish gifts and expensive toys, which Bette would then donate to hospitals, shelters, etc….because in her opinion the best gift you could ever give a kid was a notebook and a pencil.
I gained a new respect for Bette Midler after that .
Good old fashioned paper & pencil—there’s nothing like it.
My son went to first and second grade with Bette Midler’s daughter…she was a kick. Paper and pencil, you bet!
Love your iPad! Mine looks quite similar and I carry it with me all the time!
Have a good weekend!

I’m definitely old school in this electronic age – pen and paper rule!
Ohh, I have the same iPad! I keep stacks of them in our filing cabinet along with all of the other cheap school supplies we score every summer! And I always need to take notes at IKEA!!!!
LOVE the iPad! ha
At least you won’t have to worry about someone stealing that iPad. Or how to recycle it. I personally love the sound the paper makes when you rip it off of the spirals. Zzzzzip!
I’m not a dinosaur after all! I’ve got an iPad – love it and the post!
