July Food Stamp Challenge — Day 23, Yard Sale Day

by Katy on July 23, 2011 · 9 comments

Today is day 23 of the July Food Stamp Challenge, and all I’m thinking about is tying up the details of today’s yard sale. You may recall that I had a one-day sale back in May. Afterwards I put everything back into the garage (still priced and sitting on tables) in anticipation of today. (I also will be adding new freshly-decluttered stuff to the sale) Well . . . today is here and I am working hard to do all the last minute stuff that needs to get done.

I did unearth a vintage Salton Yogurt Maker from my father’s basement yesterday, and plan on making some homemade yogurt. Perhaps I can wean my husband from the expensive Greek yogurt he buys at Costco. But this experiment will have to wait until this evening, (or most likely Monday) as I expect to be somewhat zonked by this evening.

Tonight’s dinner will be takeout pizza from a Groupon that I bought. Of course it was free, as I almost always have Groupon credit to spend.

Have a great Saturday!

I’ve never mustered up the patience for a garage sale. If I have an item big enough for Craig’s List, I will do that. Otherwise, it’s off to donate at the thrift store.

Here’s wishing you much luck with the sale!

Good luck today! I am currently in the throws of decluttering and demucking with the intent of throwing the Queen Mother of all yard sales in August (with a couple of Dear Friends, of course). All profits will go into “The buy a new stinking computer, so I will stop swearing (and setting a poor example for my kids) at the decrepit old one” fund.

Have you seen the Salad In a Jar blog? She has some serious info on yogurt & troubleshooting if you have a problem. Here is a link

I like the idea of the yogurt maker but am too cheap to buy one so I just make it in my oven w/ the light on. Once it is set I use cheese cloth to strain it & make greek yogurt. It’s really good.

Oy-freaking-vey, I am exhausted!

However, my clutter-load is lighter and my wallet it heavier. 😎

Boyfriend and I are laughing ourselves silly over “oy-freaking-vey.”

Home-made yogurt is SO easy! I’ve been making it for years and my family can’t get enough of it. I’m in the middle of tagging articles for a consignment sale….wow, it’s a ton of work!

‘Greek’ yogurt can be mostly easily recreated with regular yogurt, cheesecloth or pper towels or similar material, and a strainer. Its incredibly simple, though somewhat time consuming, and I can’t tell the difference. Plus its much cheaper, especially if you are making your own yogurt to begin with. Good luck with your yard sale!

Use the expensive Greek yogurt for starter. Then you get more, non-expensive Greek yogurt!

Try Frugal Girls yogurt recipe but increase sugar to 1 1/2 cups and add vanilla. I know it sounds awful and the sugar police will take you but it is really easy and with the extra sugar, it will smooth over the store bought palate til they get used to homemade.
My kids shivered at homemade but they look forward to it now.
