Let’s Go for a Portland Non-Consumer Walk!

Hi there, today is the ideal crispy fall weather and I have errands to run, so please join me for a non-consumer walk!

Don’t forget to cue up your Libby audiobook!

We need to drop another family ballot at the library. Luckily Multnomah County makes it easy and safe to vote.

As long as we’re at the library, let’s pick out a book. You never know, it might be our lucky day!

Lots of neighbors are taking advantage of the dry weather to set out their “Free Boxes.” Let’s see if there’s anything fun.

This carved wooden box looks like something my kid’s partner would like, it’ll look amazing after a wood oil treatment!

This Free Pile, (different than a “Free Box”) might hold some treasures. Do I spy a ceramic flowerpot, complete with built-in drip tray?

Yes! I’ve been scouting the thrifts for one and it’s so much more satisfying to find one for free.

Exactly what I need to plant the propagated starts that my sister brought from New York. Patience was key.

It’s apple season, so many of our urban neighbors have fruit to share.

Don’t worry, there’s enough for everyone.

Now it’s time to sneak through the spooky alley to see if Fred Meyer has tomatoes on their clearance shelf. (Oops, I accidentally dressed in top-to-bottom denim!) I bought a ten pound bag of potatoes for trick-or-treaters and anticipate that I’ll have leftovers.
Kids love silliness and so do I.

$1.50 for a big bag of tomatoes is a capital “B” Bargain! The PLU number (4664) tells us that these are the “on the vine” tomatoes that normally cost $2.49/pound.

Ours cost less than 75¢/pound.

My family loves The Enchanted Broccoli Forest’s restuffed potatoes that get topped with tomato slices. It’s one of our comfort food dishes.

We didn’t find any change, but here’s a smashed beer can that’ll earn us 10¢ when returned to the store. Now we can say that we “Recently came into some money!”
I declare this a Capital “S” Successful non-consumer walk! Now it’s time to enjoy a cup of tea and lay down with a library book.

Haha, my walks are somewhat similar, but I look for receipts, little free library books, stuff by the dumpsters (too good to throw away!), and random abandoned clothing to wash and donate. Occasionally I will go to the little free pantry. I went this morning, to drop off items, and took a bag of shredded coconut.
I also returned books in the library drop-off, and went to Panera for lunch. I wanted to check if I still had money on my virtual gift card. The cashier looked up the code, rang up the half-sandwich I had ordered, and then said “$5.11.” I reached for my wallet and she said, “No, you still have $5.11 on your card!” I was amazed, because I didn’t remember that the value was that high. It was a good surprise.
I have cleared a path in my kitchen for the new refrigerator to be delivered. I have yet to tell my neighbors they’ll have to clear the stuff on the stairway. I’m waiting to be informed about a more specific delivery time than “sometime on Sunday.”
The food in the freezer is still there , since I won’t take it out until I know more about timing. I can probably take out the condiments, however, because there is no coolness left in the fridge.
