One Covid Thing

Note how we wore masks on the flight!

My husband and I are on day four of our 14-day vacation to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. A trip that was to start and end at my sister’s house in New York City.

This morning my husband ran a Covid self test as he had “a runny nose.” His test was immediately positive and he began to have a fever and body aches within a few short hours. We quickly notified everyone we’d been in contact with and arranged to pick up a Paxlovid prescription. He’s the first person in our immediate family to get Covid, so it’s a huge bummer. Edit: I now have Covid as well.

So gone is the side trip to visit college friends in New Hampshire, gone is the other side trip to Pittsburgh to visit with family. Instead we’ll be here, quarantining from one another and apologizing repeatedly to my sister.

Oh, Katy, this is a memorable anniversary but in a very unwanted way. So sorry to hear this and it’s especially a bummer, being as you were careful about wearing a mask on the plane. Prayers going up for you that your husband recovers well and that the rest of you don’t get sick.

Katy August 10, 2023 at 4:57 pm

Thank you, and yes, there were hardly any people wearing masks on the flight.

Proud of you for wearing the masks and being so responsible! So sorry your vacation is interrupted this way and hope he recovers fast with Paxlovid on board and that no one else in your family catches it. Masks really help but there is so much covid around and so few being careful that it is hard to avoid. Believe he is a first responder so know he follows the drill and is a model for public health.
Sending huge support and much caring. Please update us all on progress.

We were so careful!

Such a bummer and I wish him a speedy recovery. We also just caught covid for the first time and it was not fun but the paxlovid helped. It does give you a horrible metal taste in your mouth though. I tested negative on day 6 but now on day 8 husband is still positive so he’s still in quarantine. Hope you guys get to to do a little something on the tail end of your trip at least.

Just took a Covid test myself because I’m feeling less than 100% and was at a seminar with 50 some people this week. But, so far looks to be negative. So sorry to hear your husband was not so lucky. Hope you can avoid it and he is testing negative and feeling better soon!

Oh, dang it! I hope he recovers fast and you and your sister’s household all stay well.

So are you quarantining at one of your destinations? When I flew to Maui a few weeks ago there were 2 passengers nearby who coughed and sneezed all the way without a mask

Reply

Katy August 11, 2023 at 11:04 am

Yes, we’re quarantining at my sister’s house and have cancelled all plans.

So sorry to “hear” this. After all of the planning, what a bummer. Hope he feels better soon.

Well that just sucks. I finally got it in April after being so careful. My husband got it from the hospital of all places and promptly gave it to me and I gave it to my sister and she gave it to her daughter. We are a very sharing family I guess.

If I was to offer any advice? Sleep your butt off and than sleep some more. Get yourself some nice strong cough drops for the lovely cough that comes after.

Try and have a good time. I think it’s like 5 days to stay away. So glad you are both young and healthy. This too shall pass.

I super duper wish I was at home with my own comfortable bed, but my plan is to rest as much as possible.

Oh Katy, I am so sorry to hear this. Your husband’s act of care and responsibility I’m sure saved fellow travelers and people you were planning on visiting from contracting Covid. I’m just sorry it happened right as you were starting your anniversary trip. Inopportune time to say the least. Hope he’s feeling better soon and hoping you avoid it.

Sad beginning to your trip. Hopefully, wherever here is, is warm, and has a view.
Take care of each other

It does have a view, although it’s of Long Island Sound instead of a cityscape.

Looks as if I’m late to the sympathy party here–but I’m as bummed as everyone else that this happened, especially (a) on your anniversary trip and (b) after you’d both been so careful. I wish Dale a quick recovery, and I hope that you and Jessica (plus all the other folks you had to notify after contact) don’t get it.

My daughter, son-in-law and GD all have it- they live in Brooklyn. GS 5 is still negative. They are fortunate with few symptoms but bored staying in. I’m a Covid virgin myself and still wearing a mask at the grocery store. I hope if you get it, you aren’t sick and it doesn’t spoil the vacation.

Katy, I’m sorry to hear you’re not going to be making the memories/connections you were planning to make.

DH came down with Covid when we were visiting relatives in CT last summer. He felt miserable for many hours before a rapid test came up positive. We headed for home as soon as we suspected he was sick and luckily I was the only other person that caught it. I’m glad your husband is taking an anti-viral, DH did and he recovered rapidly though he was pretty sick before starting it. I had a milder case and my doctor did not think I needed an anti-viral. While I was not terribly sick it did take me a few weeks to recover. I think taking an anti-viral is brilliant.

I hope no one else becomes sick and your husband feels better soon.

Almost no one is masking these days. We flew to/from Providence last month and no one besides us, on either flight, was masked. We saw a couple of people masked in the airport at BWI but that was it.

Reply

Katy August 11, 2023 at 10:56 am

Yeah, I hardly saw anyone else wear a mask at either airport or on the plane.

Well, that stinks. I follow an ER Doctor on Twitter and just read yesterday how the virus is coming back strong. I am 78 and should mask up. I have been very lucky so far. I wish you and your husband a quick recovery.

I’m so sorry! At least you didn’t have hotel reservations. Hopefully you can still do some of your trips once y’all test negative.

I won’t put any of my friends/family at risk for Covid, so we’re not going to visit the people we’d planned on seeing. Instead we’re holed up at my sister’s house. She and her daughter are also sick, although they haven’t tested positive yet.

Sounds like we are living a parallel experience. It is my 22nd anniversary. I tested positive at back to school prep days. I missed my first week of school with the kids, my son’s visit from college and our trip to tahoe which the boys are now taking themselves.

Five Grateful Things;
1. Excellent medical help which provided free Paxlovid
2. Sick days at school to use ( although begrudgingly)
3. It is a lot easier to have a low buy August. Looks like I will easily meet my goal.
4. I found Non Ultra Food Processed “Angel Mints” to help with my Paxlovid mouth. This means I can continue my 100 day challenge.
5. A beautiful home to putter around in with free chess lessons, making greeting cards, sewing crafts.

Ugh, so sorry to hear you’re both sick on vacation. Be as well as can be.

Selena August 11, 2023 at 7:27 pm

I rarely go out in public nor travel. The couple non-family places I go is sans mask *but* I maintain a distance and keep a hawks eye out for signs of illness in others.
Next “challenge” for me is an out of state visit – sad to say magat land so I will be extra vigilant. IF I have to be anywhere near/in the pharmacy area, it is mask time. Covid is not going away and is mutating faster than anything in a 1950s B drive-in horror movie.

As someone who witnessed my father-in-law’s horrific death from Covid, please take this advice. Do nothing strenuous for the next several weeks. Even if you feel better, give yourself several more weeks to recover. No long walks, no exercising or carrying heavy things or yard work either.

He died from Covid pre-vaccine. After his first hospitalization he was sent home with steroids that made him feel great, and he got right back to physically demanding activities. 4 days later he was in the hospital again and died 2 weeks after that. The doctors we spoke with after the second hospitalization told us that we should do no physically exerting activities for several weeks if we caught covid to allow our bodies to heal. Unfortunately, my FIL either wasn’t told the same advice, forgot they told him or ignored it. He suffocated to death in the end, there’s no way to describe it or sugarcoat it. It’s horrible and cruel what covid can do to a body.

Even vaccinated people can have permanent lung damage from Covid, and we have zero idea what the long term effects will be from having it. Taking a few weeks off to heal can be the difference between being healthy or having permanent and debilitating lung damage. Please take it easy, you are worth it.

I travelled on a plane in Aug. of 2022. I got Covid 3 days later. My 2 traveling companions did not. Only a mild case with 1 day of elevated temp. I am traveling on a plane in this year in late August. Will lightning strike again? I plan to wear a mask this time in the airport & on the plane.
