Used Information, and it’s all New!

Like watching me on TV blathering on about buying used? Well then, you’re in luck!

Local news channel KGW 8 (NBC) recently ran a Simple Solutions story about me, so click and enjoy all the non-consumery goodness!

Note — I paid $0 not $80 for the TV, work part-time not full-time as a nurse; and of course, my name is Katy Wolk-Stanley. 😉

Otherwise, it’s all good!

Thank you to Cathy Marshall for the great story!

I am reminded of Willa Cather’s book, Winter Thunder. It’s about an horrendous surprise blizzard on the Nebraska plains that trapped school children and resulted in heroic efforts to survive. When a reviewer reported that her facts were not entirely accurate and it was much worse than she described, her response was that readers would not have believed the story if she had written it as it really happened. In your case, perhaps they thought KGW viewers just couldn’t believe someone could live so well on a part-time job with a tv that did not cost a month’s salary. Too bad. It’s still a good article. Nice to have supportive press.

I need to learn to make my points more succinctly in interviews, so they don’t have the option to include all my asides.

I just discovered a way to re-purpose those little black dishes our microwave meals are packaged in. I took one and inverted it and used a hole punch like you would use on leather or rubber. I made a couple of dozen holes so the fat drips on through. Now this little black boat fits perfectly in the bottom of my 5qt crockpot, when you roast a whole chicken in it, it will keep the bird out of the schmaltz(fat), now I engineered a support for the middle from the neck of a glass olive oil bottle or you could probably just use the metal cap as a 5lb bird would probably crush the flimsy plastic dish. This makeshift grill can be washed and used over and over. For tasty broth and gravies , you can schlep the fat into ice cube trays and freeze and store in zip-lock bags for future use, beats heck out of buying that bland high priced broth in the store. Jus dyin’ to try it! Hasta La Bye Bye!

Oh, in addition to my previous post on my homemade Mickey Mouse crockpot grill you can cook burgers on it also, it only takes about an hour on high and 4-5 hours for a 5lb bird. I’m going to use my digital thermometer on the bird so the alarm goes off when it hits 165*. Happy and frugal crockpotting!

The key is to hardly own any clothing. 😉

I’m working on that part. I don’t have a ton of clothes now, and I have several pieces headed to consignment, which, by the way, I had never done until I started reading your blog. Thank you for the inspiration! 🙂

Great piece! I think the highlights of your ideas came through well in the limited time available. It was cool to see all the pieces in their places in your house that we’ve seen bit by bit on your as you refurbished them. You looked so relaxed. Great job!

I scored MAJORLY at Goodwill last week – 3 Billy Blanks dvds (I figured if I used them once each, it’s cheaper than classes because I don’t belong to a gym), a pitcher for watering plants (our old one broke after lots of watering, so now it doesn’t hold the water), several long-sleeved shirts for winter, and a really cute dress (Michael Kors, no less!) that looks very Crocodile-Dundette. Teehee.

My 12 year old lap top running linux won’t let me watch the video. (insert crying face) I’m sure it was inspirational. I ripped the knee out of my favorite pants the other day. : ( I mended them but know they won’t hold so I need to search Goodwill for a replacement. I really liked those britches so they will definately be made into shorts for summer rotation. I have never before in my life actually worn out my clothing. It’s a new experience and I don’t like it….I get attached to my favorite clothing now and when they have served me well I hate to see them go.
Fare thee well Gap skinny leg khakis long pants.

Congrats on making it to the local news…even if they did make a few errors. You did good! But (and there’s always a but isn’t there?) as you gave them a tour of your kitchen what did I see? That fire extinguisher…still behind the stove! Katy! Really? We covered this already…if there’s a fire on your stove top you aren’t going to be able to reach that extinguisher. And something else to think about, that fire extinguisher is under extreme pressure. Having it that close to a source of heat could potentially cause it to explode. You wouldn’t store your collection of spray paint above the stove would you? Course not! You’re too smart for that. …RIGHT?!!
