In addition to this blog, I also run a companion Non-Consumer Advocate Facebook group, which is currently hovering around 79,000 members. Prospective members have to answer a simple question, which helps to weed out the ever present spammers. The answers are always interesting, so I’ve started saving them to share in blog posts.

Army vet who first read recycling info while in upstate NY following the USArmy gig in 1976. Recalling my childhood memories of the dump just over the hill in WA state where I grew up, I was immediately on board with the minimalism that is a natural pairing with careful/thought-filled purchasing and make-do living. (Imagine my aghast-ness when 3 years later, as a first time home buyer, being laughed at by the disposal workers when I tried to recycle my carefully cleaned and sorted metal and glass…(Are we the walking dead, or WHAT?!?!) I’ve been turning one thing into another thing in order to be practical and grateful all my life. You sound like the tribe I ought to belong.

I wish I could join your FB group, also, but I haven’t been able to get into my FB account since October 2022. I have been unable to contact FB to help me; I think someone hijacked the account bc someone at church inquired as to why I was asking people for $61. I wasn’t. (Major suspect: Ex-Roommate from Hell, who has IT experience. Other persons of interest include my former students, many of whom were considered “high risk” and engaged in questionable activities.) A year or so later, another friend looked me up and said my photo said “government entity.” Whatever that means!
Anyway, for the poster who mentioned Tightwad Gazette, there is (or was, as of Oct. 2022) a Tightwad Gazette Fan Club FB group. That is the one I miss the most out of all my FB groups and friends! Had I known there was a NCA FB group, I would’ve joined yours as well! My reason for joining: to become a part of a like-minded community that encourages and supports one another.
Sorry to be the Luddite from Hell here, but I continue to remain off Facebook and would like to encourage others to do the same, given Zuckerberg’s recent decision to take off the guardrails on posting. I got off Xitter some time ago, and I haven’t ordered anything from Amazon in 1.5 years. So take that, oligarchs.
Me too. I don’t want to participate or contribute to FB in any way. I do use the messenger function though. I also have unsubscribed from X on principle.
I wish there was a better option that aligned with my values. In the meantime I enjoy the blog and the related comments.
