Goal of The Week — Closet Chaos

by Katy on July 23, 2013 · 22 comments

It’s Monday Tuesday, which means it’s time for Goal of The Week! A new weekly segment where Non-Consumer Advocate readers set and then reach small attainable goals.

“Not a soccer goal, but a personal goal. A single do-able, not overwhelming goal. A concrete goal. A reachable goal. A realistic goal.”

So no huge vague goals like “organize the house” or “lose weight.” A single attainable goal.

Last week’s goal was to complete the guest cottage information books that I started a year-and-a-half ago! Unfortunately, I chose a week to do this when my mother was mostly out of town, and had zero interest in working with me on this project.

Oops.

Fortunately, it makes no difference if this project takes an extra week or two, so it’s not really a big deal.

I set a new goal for this week, which is to organize and declutter the closet in our spare bedroom. Although this closet is far from disaster, it’s kind of fallen into a state of disorder that bugs me every time I pull open the curtain. Unlike last week’s goal, this one has an actual deadline, as my older sister and her kids are arriving for a three-week visit this Sunday, and I want them to be able to store their luggage out of the way.

Plus, it’s important that my sister sees how superior I am to her. 😉

Closet Chaos

And here’s what’s lurking off to the sides:

Closet detail

I will need to remove most everything and decide what stays and what goes. Also, I suspect that I’ll need to pick up a few organizing bins from my local Goodwill. (Thrift shops are a great source for organizational supplies!)

I’m excited to get started on this project, as organizing stuff always feels very self indulgent. Weird, but true.

I did find a cd tower for 5 bucks at the goodwill. I store supplies for my business in CDs, so it fit the bill. Now I a, trying to retro fit a turn table I got from a spice rack so that it will rotate for me.

Goal of the Week:

Get the furniture moved around and resituated. I’m in the middle of a major apartment overhaul. I’m trapped in this town until at least next April. The least I can do is put some creative effort into freshening up my nest so I’m not completely miserable.

Tall, strong 14yo son is home from his vacation travels and will now be put to use helping me shift furniture! 🙂

1. Big desk to his room.
2. Little blue desk to my room.
3. Little table to living room.
4. Couch under the window.
5. Craft cabinet from my room to living room.
6. MAYBE the cedar chest from the living room to my room, but I’ve got some measuring and imagining to do before deciding on that one.
7. Completely rearrange my room and make it NOT boring.

Actually HAVE our overdue garage sale. It has been difficult with my husband throwing weekend activities and other commitments plus the teenager attempting to move out and the addition of my surgery 2 weeks ago. The last 2+ weeks have gotten terribly congested around here with the folding boxings I’ve been assembling to contain the garage sale items. He needs to shift the RV over so we can store the cargo trailer behind it so that I can then use the garage to spend Wed&Thurs moving/staging all my collected boxes from around the house and adding all other other sale items that don’t fit in them.

Actually get my backlog of paper filing into the newly re-arranged metal filing cabinet. Delayed due to window repairs in that room.

My goal of the week was a repeat of a previous goal of the week… vacuum and mop my wooden floorboards. Again very overdue, but I finally got around to doing this again on the weekend, as well as scrubbing the bathroom. I’m loving how clean the house is!

It’s probably a bit sad that basic cleaning is a goal of the week for me, but I do find it tends to run away from me.

My next goal(s) of the week:

– order and pay for taps for my bathroom renovation
– schedule dentist appointment

My goal for this week is to sew the crib quilt, bumper pad, and bed skirt for my first grandchild due in October. (D-I-L is very organized and has the nursery done except for this, so the pressure is on!)

My goal is to finish unloading and sorting all the books off the shelves in the living room. Then, next week it’ll be adding books from around the house, so they are all present and sorted into keep/give away/donate. Then, to reshelve. And it all needs done before 8/20, when school starts back. Whew.

Finish painting my hallway. 7 doors and a mirror to cut-in around. This takes forever! I have to do in stages because of time. This was an excuse to not even get started for a while. But I decided to just go ahead and do what I could for a few days in a row. Getting closer!
Bonus: This is an almost full gallon of paint that I picked up from a neighbor’s curb. Free! Behr Premium Plus. They had it marked “Bathroom” so that is what we jokingly call the sort of khaki color.
Love free paint!

Is that a violin-body bass guitar? *eyes it wistfully*

Simmer down, it’s the guitar from Beatles Guitar Hero. 😉

I knew I recognized it! We have “instruments” for the whole Beatles Rock Band. Storage is a pain. If they’re not out, the kids don’t think about playing the game. If they’re out, they’re in the way. Especially the drum kit. This was actually on my to-do list for today.

I’m still working on the project I started last week, going through old greeting cards and cutting the fronts off for St. Jude’s. I have done quite a bit with it but it is very very time consuming. I will continue on it this week. I did sell a Susan Bates knitting kit from WWII era on Ebay for $102!! This belonged to my m-i-l. I’d like to say I’m putting the money in the bank or doing something fun with it but unfortunately I have to send it to the IRS. Oh well, that’s life.

Got 2 of the 3 plants potted up from last week’s GOTW. The flock of mosquitoes and 100 degree weather drove me to distraction. Third pot will be planted today.

This week’s GOTW is to sew the headbands I’ve cut out so I can take them to the shop by Monday at the latest.

My goal is to paint the upper kitchen cabinets and do the last 10% touch up to the lower cabinets that I painted a few weeks ago.

Still working on homeschool stuff. It probably doesn’t help that I decided to sell a couple bookcases so there are more than the normal amount of piles lying around needing to be dealt with.

And, today I met my other goal for this week – finally meeting an absolutely adorable new baby belonging to a friend!

I want to get the floors and baseboards really clean. Have to
do this by hand, due to rather insanely overdue nature of task.

Yay! I finished last week’s goal of cleaning out the hall closet. It actually didn’t take very long once I got started (just call me “queen of the procastinators” 🙂 ).

This week’s goal is to find several free activites that I would be interested in doing and putting them on my calendar. I live in a big city where there are loads of events, but somehow I end up putzing around the house instead of taking advantage of these things. So this week’s goal is to find at least3 events taking place this summer that sound fun and fit our schedule, and then get them on the calendar.

That’s a great goal! I am the queen of hanging out too much at home, yet I’m always happy when I get off my duff to take advantage of the great city I live in. I did organize the closet in the spare bedroom, staying up until 2 A.M. to make it happen. (I started past 11 P.M., so that’s my fault!) I absolutely wouldn’t have tackled this project if it hadn’t been for “Goal of the Week” and the Non-Consumer Advocate community.

Mwah!

I have to say : this blog is inspirational! Who knows, I might just finally set a few mini -goals and get them done before going to work!

I seem to be overwhelmed on the ‘where to start’ portion and maybe this ‘taking it one step…’ will finally work.

House is longggggg over-due for a cleaning; plants are crying for a re-potting. and frankly, I’m finding it hard to find a place to walk safely,
inside the house.
Time for some shut-eye.. then early wake-up. I’ll let you know how it goes.

Thanks for the gentle reminder and the great inspiration.
