Goal of The Week — Fix My Calamine Windows

by Katy on July 31, 2013 · 13 comments

It’s Monday Tuesday, Wednesday which means it’s time for Goal of The Week! A new weekly segment where Non-Consumer Advocate readers set and then reach small attainable goals.

“Not a soccer goal, but a personal goal. A single do-able, not overwhelming goal. A concrete goal. A reachable goal. A realistic goal.”

So no huge vague goals like “organize the house” or “lose weight.” A single attainable goal.

Last week’s goal was to organize my spare bedroom closet, which functions as board game storage, linen cupboard, random storage, and also random storage. (So much random stuff that it gets two, count ’em two categories!)

Remember the before?

My plan had been to pick up a few storage bins at Goodwill to contain like items, but I ended being able to scavenge enough bins from around the house for this project. And for two cardboard boxes, I simply cut off the flaps and used a Sharpie to write the contents on the outside. This method will never merit a photo in a decor magazine, but it’s ever so functional and epitomizes my “Make it do” credo.

So . . . welcome to my freshly organized closet!

This week’s project?

To sand down all the wood filler around the leaded glass windows in my living room. (Doesn’t it look like calamine lotion?)

BTW, I am fully aware that I completed failed with my before and after photos this week. Take my word that the closet is truly transformed.

Blech – still slogging through school stuff. I decided I am going to skip making that my goal and focus on something that I will actually do.

My goal this week is to prime and paint the bedside table/bookshelf my husband built for one of our daughters. I primed yesterday so I’m already on my way to completing it. I did discover that sometimes procrastinating pays off. I have been putting off picking out which one of the 50 million shades of white paint to buy and use for this project. Last Saturday I helped my husband clean out the paint shelf and lo and behold there was a whole unused gallon of a white semi-gloss that had been purchased long ago for an eventually abandoned project. Double win – I saved dollars by not buying more paint and I didn’t have to use up mental energy on making a color decision!

I love it when that happens!

I loved your name on the windows – it does indeed look like mozzie bite lotion, and the title was interesting enough that I read through this sooner than I might have!

My goals (if I get til next Wed) is to have ALL boxes unpacked from the move on Monday. Ambitious, but aim high!

My goal is to get all the stuff that I brought into the office – to donate, sell, or otherwise leave the house – out! It’s a growing pile and my dogs and I are beginning to walk on it. Not good. Now I just have to sort and drive.

My goal of the week was basically get ready for camping next week and to finally put the crap in the bags and de-clutter a few “hot spots” around the house. With the co-operation of my son, we got rid junk from his room, broken toys and toys he never had an interest in. The Sally Ann will love us after his donation, not to mention I got rid of a good deal of things from my person storage closet of horrors. To be completed tomorrow is getting our female kitten spayed. Hopefully I can get some meals made for our camping trip tomorrow.

My goal for the past couple of weeks has been recycling greeting cards, this is taking longer than expected but I’m still working on it. I also decided this week I would get a new address book and transfer all the numbers, etc., from the old one. My old one was falling apart. I went to several stores and couldn’t find one (I think I’m one of the few people left who use a book). In fact, one person in a store told me to put all the info in my contact list and back it up. No way, I still like having a book. So tried all last week trying to find one and then lo and behold went to lunch with a friend and she had one in her house that she bought 10 years ago and never used and gave it to me. I scored!!

I have two goals this week, but not sure I can do both…. so we’ll see which one catches my fancy first:
— Combine and consolidate my two binders of recipes, both of which are falling apart, into one new one. This is more complicated than it might seem, as they hold different size paper with holes in different places.
— Sew a water bottle holder, like one I saw a woman wearing last week. It was like a purse, with a long handle that hangs over your shoulder, shaped to hold a water bottle and to absorb the condensation. I thought it was brilliant, and want to try making one.

Decisions, decisions…

My goal of the week is to remove the hard drive from the “expired” computer and buy the correct external USB case for it so I can transfer the files to the new computer. Hopefully I’ll be able to also transfer all of my old Outlook contacts, emails, etc.

My goal is to clean out the pantry. I have avoided it for entirely too long and husband is off Thursday- Sunday so he can help. Would love to paint walls while it is empty. Have a couple quarts of free paint from Ace Hardware so it wouldn’t cost any $!
