Non-Consumer Photo Essay — Summertime

by Katy on July 24, 2012 · 16 comments

It’s time for another Non-Consumer Photo Essay, as summer is a time of visual interest and low attention span.

The hydrangeas are finally in full bloom:

Which means that my new Frankoma pitcher earns her keep:

Sun tea is in frequent rotation, which allows to me to use up some of the odd tea flavors that sneak into my house.

My wheelbarrow planter is finally seeded with a variety of different lettuces:

Even though the metal supports rusted off over the winter.  A stack of bricks seem to be working quite nicely.

Review books are filling my mailbox, including A Year of Pies: A Seasonal Tour of Home Baked Pies by my pal Ashley English.

And as always, a Goodwill bag fills with the extraneous Stuff that litters my home.

Your Target stores have paper bags? Never seen ’em here in VA.

I’m not sure where that bag came from. One of life’s little mysteries.

Love the hydrangeas! Are those Nikko Blue (like they have in Japan)? No matter how many coffee grounds I add, I cannot get ours to turn blue here in Michigan. We had an early spring and then a frost this year, so I am missing my pink Nikko Blue Hydrangeas.

I was also envying the handled paper bag from Target.

These hydrangeas are from cuttings that my father rooted. And I too have tried to influence the color without success.

🙁

I’ve never seen a Target bag like that either! Just plastic here.

They do give a few cents’ credit for bringing your own bag, though.

We lived in the Portland area for five years, then back to So Cal.

We adored it with one caveat. Flowers are blooming down here months before they are up there. I did miss that in Oregon. The pictures of the hydrangeas reminded me of this as our hydrangeas have been out for probably two months.

Not quite enough sun there. Not quite enough rain here.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE blue hydrangeas!! I’m also loving that dresser and mirror behind the hydrangeas! The wheelbarrow is very cute. 😉

The mirror was from Goodwill and the dresser is something that I bought in 1993 from an antique store. It has a marble top and I *love* it!

Those flowers are beautiful. My bush is about 3 years old and in the shade but the blooms are not half so large. Maybe with age??? I just wanted to tell you after reading the encouragement to go from plastic to glass food storage, I found Pyrex glass storage set at a kitchen outlet store regularly $27.99 on sale for $19.99. It’s not free, but better than full price.

What are you making your sun tea in?
I tried three thrift store Sun tea jugs, the kind with spigots, they all leaked. maybe that is why they ended up at the thrift store.

I just use the glass juice pitcher that you see in the photo. I scoop the tea bags out with a spoon and just pour from the top. No spigot necessary! 😀

I love your retro black dial phone – is it operational?

It is, although we no longer have home phone service, only cell phones.

Love the dresser!! I was noticed the top looked white and wondered if it was marble that makes it even more loveable.

Hey Paula in the UP! I grew up in Cheboygan, Michigan (now living on the gulf coast of Mississippi) – it’s always nice to find fellow Michiganders online!
