The Simple Pleasures of Beachy Goodness — Oregon Style

by Katy on August 28, 2013 · 11 comments

The simple pleasures of the Oregon coast. Brothers taking hours long walks to the end of beach, the stinging cold of the Pacific ocean and the classic gourmet treat of s’mores and weenie roasts. And then at the of the day, putting your feet up in front of a facsimile of crashing waves.

No one here cares about having a bikini-ready body or glowing golden skin. This is Oregon, and we wear coats over bathing suits and light fires for warmth instead of ambiance.

And it’s where I am.

I’d better grab an extra layer, it looks pretty chilly out there.

I saw your “no comments” remark on facebook and I clicked the link to come here- I don’t know what time you posted this but it wasn’t visible this afternoon.

I’ve been having a lot of trouble view this website recently- sometimes I can se a post and then the next time I come that post is gone and the most recent one is the previous post. I usually come thru google rather than a bookmark or anything.

Maybe others are having trouble too and that’s why no comments.

Here is a comment for you!! 😉

We live in Texas at the moment and have just been to Santa Monica Pier visiting the in-laws.. I have to say I really don’t like Santa Monica at all. I felt it was fake and my husband and I who was a Portland then L.A child, prefers Portland.
We walked around the farmers market in Santa Monica and couldn’t believe the cost of everything and families that where head to toe Ralph Lauren and had colour coordinating outfits. It just seemed like it was the place you had to go and be seen at, not a place to get healthy food.. As for sun tans well we live in Texas, it’s to hot to go outside and get a tan!

We like Portland due to the amazing array of individualism you get there, it seems a place where no one really judges you that much for being a bit odd or not wearing the latest Gucci clothes. It seems that everyone is accepted into the Portland way of life.

Beaches are much more fun when you can set fire to something and toast marshmallows and have a beer. Santa Monica all you could do was people watch and they all looked the same with there tiny Prada bikinis!

Plus I am a redhead so no glowing golden skin for me! unless my freckles join one day and then I will have a super tan!
There rant and comment over. I know a little of track but I felt like you needed a comment.

My comment may seem a little judgmental oops sorry, I am sure Santa Monica is a great place to live.

My hubby and I traveled along the coast of Oregon. We found a house on the ocean, 4 bdr, 2 bth, 2 years old for around 165K. Naturally we ran to go and check it out. The reason for the price, the weather is awful in the winter, we found out the people who live in the area leave and go inland cause of the rain and cold and the water in the ocean is too cold anytime of the year so no swimming. We also saw some signs to watch out for floating logs in the surf!! I think I’ll stick with the east coast, can swim pretty much year round and if you meet up with a shark, they usually let go after the first bite. Of course, the west is still beautiful and we did enjoy our trip.

I’d expect that most northern east coast homes are similar. I don’t know where you are on the east coast, but I grew up in Boston and I can assure you that the water in New England is definitely not swimable year-round! Maybe it’s not the best place to live year round but the Oregon coast is still very pretty.

I grew up an hour from the beach in Oregon, and we often headed over the coast range for the day. If we got there and the weather was too yucky, we would go to the Marine Science Center (it used to be a tiny little place that was never crowded), have some chowder at Mo’s and head home…even bad weather couldn’t ruin the trip. And often when it was dreary in the valley, it was GREAT at the coast!
I am 600+ miles inland now and miss the easy access to an ocean!

Sounds pretty similar to much of the UK coast! Okay I’m being a little harsh…we do have sunny and still beach days…but generally……..
The beach is great fun whatever the weather. A place to put the world behind you.
Was chilling watching Twilight on Terrestrial TV last night whilst channel flicking and I’m imagining your Oregon beach to be a little like La Push?

As for being beach ready… That means having wellies and waterproofs to hand over here! (I am being harsh – we’ve actually had a decent summer this year).

You can’t beat a British coastal area. I spent many a time at Felixstowe running around the WWII dug outs and watching the ferries. Then going on the fair ground rides as a child.
Agree about the Wellies!

You can’t beat a British seaside town for the fairground rides!

I’ll take the coast of Oregon any day! Especially the central coast near Waldport. We’ve had plenty of sunny, swimsuit, summer days (though swimming is more comfortable in a wetsuit) and days any time of the year when a fire is called for. You can’t beat the beauty of the Oregon coast. Color me jealous! I won’t get up there ’til next summer.
