Drop Dead Tired

Flying from Oregon to Japan, I was surprised to experience next to no jet lag. We spent a full 24 hours getting from point A (Portland) to point B (Hiroshima) and hit the ground running the next morning.

Flying back from Japan to Oregon has been a different story. I am a walking zombie, despite being home since Monday, and I’m able to fall asleep faster than, well . . . pretty much anything. I’m also able to sleep all night long, so it’s not as if my daytime naps are interfering with my ability to get a good night’s sleep.

Just this morning I got the kids off to school and lay down to read my library edition of Drop Dead Healthy by A.J. Jacobs, (which I highly recommend. This man could transcribe the phone book and I would be first in line to devour every word!) and I was asleep within moments. So deeply asleep was I, that I ended up being late to meet up with my father and sister for lunch.

Oops.

I work all this weekend, as I did yesterday. I’m hoping that the necessity of clocking in at 7:00 A.M. will kick me back into my proper time zone.

If nothing else, I can live a vicariously healthy and well rested life with A.J. Jacobs. That’s worth something, right?

I can’t wait to read that! As soon as I heard about it a few weeks ago, I put it on hold at the library. Unfortunately 88 other people in Los Angeles had that great idea before me so I’ll have to wait quite awhile… How did you get it already?! Hope you get your energy back and have a nice weekend!

I’m an early adopter of A.J. Jacobs products. 😉

Katy, listen to your body when you can! Our bodies are magnificent things and if we listen they will tell us what we need. So, when you can, be kind to yourself and get that needed rest! You are more than worth waiting for, girl!! And by the way, I have not heard of this author or book but plan to see if I can also get it at my local library.

I have always found it harder to return when coming back eastward too.

How many hours difference is it from Japan to Portland?

THe furthest I’ve gone was Georgia to Hawaii (6 hours different I think), and I had a red-eye I didn’t sleep on at all coming back to Georgia. It took me forever to feel like myself and not a zombie!

Its always worse one way than the other-europe tends to also be easier going than coming back (mainly because the flights are usually overnight if you will and you arrive in the am). flatly ignore anyone who tells you to force yourself to stay awake all day, at least for a week, and be honest to our hospital friends. Sleep when you need to.

I always have trouble with jet lag going East. I have no problem going West but East always messes me up!

I loved his book about reading the Encyclopaedia Britannica. It almost made me want to find a set (from a garage sale, of course).
