Zero Waste Week — Day Four

Zero Waste Home

Today is Day Four of Zero Waste Week, and I work again. The grumbling about the project is starting to starting up, although I nipped that in the bud with bribery of bulk purchase of yogurt covered pretzels and fruit gummies from New Seasons.

Yesterday was more about what I didn’t do, rather than what I did do.

  • I didn’t eat individually packaged graham crackers at work.
  • I declined individually packaged chocolates.

And on an entirely different subject, I met the woman whose You Tube marriage proposal went viral and has been viewed almost 20 million times!

And there was no packaging involved. 😉

WTG Katy! Sometimes what we do not do is more meaningful that what we do. Personally I think you are doing great!

Thanks for posting that! Way more Portland than Portlandia 🙂 It’s funny how all the people seem vaguely familiar…

Refusing is the first step according to Bea Johnson, so you did well Katy! This week I am working on my awareness. Yesterday, I made a tuna fish sandwich. The tuna I use comes in one of those foil pouches that I always chuck in the garbage, but yesterday I actually read the fine print and it is recyclable aluminum so into recycling it will go for evermore. (I can’t imagine refusing tuna for the rest of my life and no, I can’t buy it in bulk.)

Thanks for doing that research, Deb. I was wondering how I was going to do w/o tuna – I love it! I never thought to read the packet!

It just seems as if I’m more aware of garbage anymore. On my walks, I feel I should take a garbage bag to pick up the trash along the way. It makes me mad that people are so unaware! It’s disgusting. I keep coming here to read responses because it calms me down and I realize there are many who are trying to leave a better world for those who follow.

The proposal video is great, but the follow-up, “Yes To Love,” made me cry! It’s a beautiful love letter to their grandparents and families. Thanks for posting it!

And good job on the zero waste…

I did fine today until the letter carrier brought a bunch of unsolicited mail. Why would an environmental organization send you a bunch of address stickers which can’t be recycled? Why do catalogs come wrapped in plastic? I’ve got to get in touch with Catalog Choise to get off these mailing lists!

I know you can put your address on lists like the Direct Marketing Association. But some companies require you to call or email them directly. I did that the other day with one of those Mailbox Values envelopes full of coupons I never use. Yesterday I called Sierra Club and requested that they stop sending me solicitations in the mail. They were happy to mark my name as “no mail.” I know how to find them if I want to contribute. I know it’s an extra step, but sometimes the direct approach is faster.
