Giveaway -- A Year of Pies: A Seasonal Tour of Home Baked Pies -- A Cookbook

Note: This giveaway has ended. Congratulations to Donna whose comments was randomly chosen to win an autographed copy of Ashley English's "A Year of Pies."

HaveI got a treat for you, which is the opportunity to win an autographed copy of Ashley English's A Year of Pies: A Seasonal Tour of Home Baked Pies. You may remember English as the author of The Homemade Living series that includes Keeping Bees, Canning and Preserving, Home Dairy and Keeping Chickens. Or, you simply might know Ashley English a the author of the blog Small Measure.

Man-O-Shevitz, is this woman prolific!

I had initially been sent a single copy of the book to use as a giveaway, but after ruining the pages with my drool reading the book like a grown-up, I decided that there was no way I was giving this book away, and I would need a separate copy for a giveaway. Although I haven't baked any of the pies yet, it's only because I've been in New York. Luckily, an extra copy (autographed no less!) arrived during my absence, so I'm finally ready to share my delicious bounty.

This beautiful cookbook is destined to become your go-to resource for all things pie. It's that good!

To enter to win a copy of A Year of Pies: A Seasonal Tour of Home Baked Pies, just write your favorite kind of pie in the comments section below. I will randomly choose a winner at 9 P.M. Pacific time on Friday, August 31. U.S. residents only, please enter one time only.

Here, I'll get you started. My favorite pie is homemade blueberry pie. (Unless it's apple, lemon merengue or coconut cream. 😉 )

Good luck, happy pie baking and a big thank you to Lark Books for mailing out an extra book to one particularly selfish blogger!

  1. Before my Mom would let me go away to college, she made sure I knew how to make a proper pie crust 🙂 I've kind of gotten out of the habit, but my favorite is rhubarb.

  2. My favorite kind of pie is one I adapted from the movie "Waitress." (If you haven't seen it and you like pie at all, then you need to go watch it! Just make sure you're not dieting at the time, because it will make you crave pie like mad.) Anyway, one of the pies she makes in the film she calls "Lonely Chicago Pie." It's blackberry-chocolate, and I've adapted a recipe from watching her make it in the movie. Graham cracker crust, brown sugar sprinkled on the bottom, then crush blackberries into melted chocolate and pour into the pie. I add a little salt in the mix - just a pinch - to take the edge off of the chocolate. MMMM!!!

  3. My favorite pie is my Nannie's (my grandmother--but that is too old a name, she says) famous apple pies. Unfortunately, she is losing her memory, so who knows if I'll ever taste one again.

  4. My favorite pie is pecan. I was born in Mississippi on an Air Force Base. There we pecan trees on the base and we would go and shake the trees and pick up the pecans. We would have bags of pecans for my mom. Great memories.

  5. Chocolate Angel Pie is my favorite. It has a baked meringue crust and the filling is whipped cream, melted chocolate, and a pinch of salt. The pie chills in the refrig for an hour or two and then we devour it. We celebrate birthdays with this pie instead of cake.

  6. Home made deep-dish blackberry & apple. Put the blackberries on the bottom, and the juice bubbles up and dyes the apples a gorgeous deep pink.

  7. OH my oh my do I love pie! (Do you remember Andie McDowells pie song in the movie MICHAEL!?) I love PIE COOKBOOKS TOO--a favorite is "SWEETY PIES"-- check it out! It reads like a story book and has recipes too..WOULD LOVE TO ADD A YEAR OF PIES cookbook to my collection!
    My favorite pie: FRESH PEACH!

  8. Rebecca:GET THAT APPLE PIE RECIPE and begin to make it-- it's your turn to keep up the family heritage!!!!!

  9. Blueberry pie, especially the one from circa 1960's Better Homes and Gardens cookbook. It has a little lemon zest and nutmeg. Perfect. mmmmmmmmm

  10. My Memaw's Quickie Applie Pie was a childhood favorite, but neither my mom nor I seem to be able to duplicate it. I wish I'd paid more attention! These days I'm a sucker for a good pumpkin pie 🙂

  11. Fresh peach pie, but don't get any ice cream or cream near mine. I'm not one of these freaks who likes to ruin their slice of pie by making them soggy and cold. Gross.

  12. My favorite to eat and to make is Coconut Cream, my grandfather's favorite and now my husband's favorite. It takes time to stir it constantly until it thickens, and to get the coconut toasted just right for on top of the whipped cream, but I truly "stir with love" on this one. And I would LOVE a copy of Ashley's book!

  13. There is a part of me that CRAVES pie. But, I am picky about my pie. I cannot get store bought pie past my lips. I love sitting, staring, waiting for inspiration. I look like quite the space cadet to anyone who walks past when I am dreaming up a pie. My favorite pie is one that ends up being a day dream come true. To pull a dream pie out of the oven and see people enjoy it as much as I enjoyed dreaming it and making it is definitely my most favorite pie. I think I will go make one now! Perhaps a grape pie...

  14. Here in the UK, I eat different types of pie, chicken and leek pie, fish pie, steak pie...so slightly different to sweet pies. I miss pies and I love lemon meringue pie and banoffee pie, pecan pie, blueberry pie...Katy, you can't possibly make me pick just one!!! I love eating and make a mean pastry!

  15. Rhubarb--no, vinegar--no, Shaker lemon pie--no, mincemeat--no, shoofly--no, apple--oh, I don't know. Pumpkin. Yeah, that's it, pumpkin. Or sweet potato, or blueberry, or chess, or or or.

    Peach. That's it.

  16. My favorite pie is homemade coconut cream pie...starting with the fresh coconut, egg custard and lard crust, yum yum!

    Lisa H.

  17. I'm with you on the pie favs........total 3 way tie with Homemade Blueberry, Apple or Lemon Meringue. Not a fan of Coconut though!

  18. French Silk... fo' shizzle. I would love to read the pie book too. I love good ol' classic ideas. Pie makes everyone happy too.

  19. Oh wow. All these FANCY pies being mentioned! Gooseberry, and chocolate blackberry?

I love me a sweet potato pie... something fierce. But I haven't made a whole lot of fruit pies in my life!

  20. I'm with you on the blueberry pie! Although I don't think I ever met a pie I didn't like. And, ooo, Tollhouse Cookie Pie. Heaven.

  21. What a beautiful book! I love pie, choosing a favorite is difficult but I'll try.
    chocolate,coconut,peach,buttermilk, raisin - that's my top 5!

  22. Yay Reese! Very Much agreed with the variety listed, but due to Grandmas Thanksgiving Traditions, I have ALWAYS loved a creamy Sweet Potato Pie... " Never use Cinnamon without Nutmeg"
One of Grandmas Culinary tip which echoes in my head every time I stand at the mixer, added the spices to taste because this family recipe is based on a familiarity of the consistency of the unbaked pie batter and seasoned to taste from memory, and when some one tastes it, and wants the recipe, a part of me Loves tapping my temple and heart and telling them that's where it is and shall remain.
I never thought my Love for this traditional family dish would ever be challenged, and it wasn't for years. Until I went to Hawaii....
Last year living on the Big Island of Hawaii I was introduced to an entirely different type of Sweet Potato Pie, made from Hawaiian Purple Sweet Potatoes and topped with a creamy coconut topping, called Haupia that is slightly sweet and just barely thicker than Meringue. My taste buds didnt know what to do... My brain had been challenged and I felt like an unfaithful spouse.
When I called my father a few days later to break the news that I had tasted something almost as good as Grandmas recipe, he didn't believe me... and I don't blame him. Sweet potato is still my favorite... I love both recipes... almost equally.

  23. My mom's apple pie is my favorite....fresh apples right off their trees right in the middle of Iowa. Nothing better!

  24. Key lime pie is my favorite!! Also pretty partial to lemon meringue, but to be honest, if it is sweet and in a pie crust, I am going to eat it 🙂

  25. Your basic apple pie baked with NY State apples! Went to the apple farm yesterday and the apples aren't quite ready yet, but man, they had tons of peaches. So I'll have to bake a peach pie!

P.S. Only pie I don't like is mince meat.

  26. Oh crud. Hard question. Lemon Chess Pie I guess. Though I do remember a Cookies and Cream Pie from my alma mater's dinning hall that was so good it always ran out first. I just don't know how to make it (and it might be a stomach ache waiting to happen if I did).

  27. Strawberry rhubarb was my favourite! Love the pairing of sweet and tart! (no pun intended!)

I also love maple syrup pie, but it's so sweet you only want a very little of it!

  28. Buttermilk. I'm a good Southern girl and I love me some buttermilk pie (and you have to say that with a real drawn long i sound).

  29. Nothing beats a homemade pecan pie! Fortunately, the two pecan trees in my yard make this a frequent dessert in my home.

  30. My favorite pie is Key Lime. And thankfully there's an authentic place in Brooklyn that does it so well I don't need to dream about the Keys to eat them!

  31. Coconut Cream Pie has to be my all time favorite, with Strawberry-Rhubarb coming in second! Thank you Katy, for inspiring me to reconsider purchases ever since I saw your television appearance!

  32. OH my gosh, picking a favorite pie is so difficult!!! With regard to the timeless question, "cake or pie?" I can say without hesitation it's pie ALL the way. I guess I'd have to go with pumpkin, although I also really dig strawberry (or really any kind of berry).

  33. My Grandma made a mincemeat pie, only at Thanksgiving, which possibly is why this has been added to my favorite list!!

  34. Ice cream pie with a crispy rice cereal/ marshmallow crust and either hot fudge or strawberry topping... depending whether the "filling" is coffee or mint chocolate chip or plain old strawberry or vanilla. Need to make some Wednesday for my daughter's birthday party on Thursday.

  35. Impossible to choose just one favorite! It's a toss-up between rhubarb and pecan- both topped with fresh whipping cream!

  36. I love my daughters Chocolate Fudge Pie from an old Farm Journal cookbook. I also love apple and blueberry.

Ashley's blog is fabulous. I would love to win this book

  37. ooooohhhh....so hard to choose ONE!!! I LOVE my mom's lemon meringue pie, but i think i'd have to say any kind of chocolate pie!

  38. My favorite pie?

Let's see, I would have to break it up seasonally:
    Summer: Peach or Blueberry
    Fall: Apple or Apple/Cranberry
    Winter: Mincemeat or Pecan
    Spring: Lemon Meringue

    The pie cookbook looks awesome!!!

  39. I haven't met a pie that I won't eat, but my favorite kind is mincemeat. Not the old fashioned kind made out of actual meat, but the raisin, apple, and cinnamon version! This is how I know that Fall has arrived 🙂

  40. Love all things pie! Favorite was my grandmother's lemon meringue. I just cannot beat it! Got turned on to your site from your Today appearance.

  41. In the spring and summer I love any pie made with berries in season. But in the winter I love chocolate caramel peacan pies. Amazing.

  42. I have two - pecan pie (made with DARK karo syrup and the pecans throughout the whole pie not just a stingy layer on top) and chocolate cream pie. Both make me drool like pavlovs dog just thinking about them.

Today my two year old and I are going to bake a little apple pie - inspired by the kids book 'apple pie for dinner'.

  43. OH my PIE!!! mine has to be strawberry rubarb now that I think of it but then again a Ky Derby Pie isn't bad either. But what about savory pies as in chicken pot pie? hhhmmmm my oh my. Nancy Settel

  44. My favorite is buttermilk pie, but my husband's is pecan, so I bake more of those. I know one isn't supposed to judge a book by its cover...but YUM!

  45. Pumpkin or butternut! I'm planning on trying out a butternut pear pie to use up my last jar of canned pears from last year.

  46. my absolute most favorite pie would be lemon meringue - only home made though - because the lemons just scream to me!

  47. Most any kind of fruit pie is good in my book, but if forced to choose it would have to be peach. Or raspberry.

  48. Apple pie. I go to the store and buy 2 of each kind of apple, since I am not really sure which ones are the best for pies. This makes a delicious apple pie.

  49. Pear pie! Crumbly topping like a French apple pie, but with tender, sweet pears inside. A nicely unexpected choice at Thanksgiving.

  50. I am delurking for pie! My favorite is strawberry blueberry! Or blueberry pear. Ok, anything with blueberries really. 🙂

    Katie

  51. Oh, I love to make pies, especially apple crumble pie!! I need to go get some apples and makeca pie, as soon as its under 90 degrees!!!

  52. I love pies! Thanks for this giveaway! I used to be firmly in the banana cream pie camp, but I've since moved over to deep dish apple. Delicious!

  53. I absolutely love a good apple pie, but if it's just run of the mill I'd take key lime, that one's hard to mess up. Thanks for the giveaway!

  54. my favs vary with the seasons, but tops on my list are pumpkin, peach, blueberry, and cherry

  55. Lemon Meringue would have to be my all time favorite, with strawberry rhubarb and English apple as close seconds!

  56. My fave has to be my mom's homemade blackberry pie (only made with berries we picked, obviously)!

Makes me wish I had easier access to the berries up here without paying an exorbitant price or trespassing!

  57. Any of the berries are great but I'm moving to a house with an apple tree that is just waiting for me to pick it's apples. So I vote apple pie!

  58. Strawberry and rhubarb . Hands down favorite. Rhubarb from the garden. Local strawberries and a crust recipe I have used for years. Makes my mouth water. The weather is still cool enough for baking and the ingredients say spring. Oh my, there will be pie in heaven.

  59. I love pie. But my favorite is Gooseberry. We have a saying at my house " There has never been a pie we didn't like"

  60. My two favorite pies (just couldn't list one) are peach and Japanese fruit pie (kinda like pecan pie, but with coconut and raisins added)
Pie is to die for! Oh, yeah, and so is tart cherry pie...!

  61. My grandma made the all-time-greatest-blackberry-pie-of-all-time. But blackberries don't grow where I live now, so my husband and I have been perfecting lemon meringue. And peach. A la mode, of course.

  62. I've always loved pumpkin, but earlier this year I got some rhubarb in my CSA box. I eyed it dubiously then set about finding an easy recipe. Now, I think it's one of my favorite pies!

  63. Kind of weird, but my favorite pie is cheddar/pear pie . . . a little sweet, a teeny bit salty - sometimes in the fall, I make it for dinner!

  64. I Love Homemade Lemon Pie. I lived in So Cal for 59 years, in the Sunkist capital of the world and we had a lemon tree so made many pies and lemonade too! Did you know lemon trees have thorns worse than rose bushes? (just FYI!) Thanks!

  65. "Man-O-Shevitz, is this woman prolific!" Still laughing at that one!

My mother made the most delicious blackberry pie last week. At the moment, that is my favorite.

  66. I'm a big fan of a well-seasoned pumpkin pie but summer fruit pies are also hard to beat. In our area ollalieberry pies are a big deal and great to enjoy warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top.

  67. strawberry-apple-rhubarb, lattice top...unless it is berry season, in which case, boysenberry-red gooseberry-blueberry-red raspberry with lattice top, of course.

  68. Mmmmm. Pie! My current favorite is a Buttermilk Pie I found on Joy the Baker. It is so simple and so yummy. Of course, berry pies (all kinds :)) and chocolate cream, on and on and on.

  69. Blueberry pie. Hands down.

Side note, I'm so happy to hear you say it's your favorite too! When the obligatory "what's your favorite pie?" conversation occurs every time I'm eating pie in a group (read: once a year at Thanksgiving) I'm almost always the only one who says blueberry! And I almost always get at least one "Really? I hate blueberry pie!" response.

  70. Caramel Pecan Silk Supreme. Anyone remember Bakers Square? French silk with a sticky pecan layer and a cream cheese layer.

  71. My mother-in-law's lemon meringue pie. If I can't get her pie and I have to make it, I like to make Derby pie. Kind of a rich chocolate chip cookie type of pie

  72. Derby Pie, Key Lime Pie, Lemon Pie, Chocolate Pie...... I don't think I have ever had pie I didn't like 🙂

  73. Pie, Pie, Pie Well almost all cream pies. My family say to me as I am doing this any pie as long as it is Cherry.

  74. Lemon Creme Pie, but Strawberry/Rubarb Cobbler runs a close second.!!!! But offer any pie and I'm sure NOT to turn it down!!!

  75. BLACKBERRY HANDPIES!!! (Especially made with FREE berries that grow like crazy where I live (Coastal Oregon) picked by my kiddos and I that very same day!)

  76. I like my son True's cream cheese chocolate pie. He started making it at age 12, I think. It is his signature pie.

  77. Hi There! Happy Wednesday! My favorite type of pie is Strawberry pie. It always reminds me of home, my parents, and family get togethers from my childhood. Have a GREAT day!

  78. my favorite pie is blackberry. when the blackberries are ripe it's coming to the end of summer, time to be with family pick berries in the early morning and bake in the late afternoon to have warm berry pie with the homemade vanilla ice cream your husband made while you baked.

  79. My favorite pie is a simple, classic apple pie with crumb topping. Preferably made by my Granny after our annual trip to the orchard : )

  80. OMG----just one? I love pies! Today is my 35th wedding anniversary and we will celebrate with APPLE PIE warm from the oven with a spoon of ice cream. I'm drooling on my keyboard as I'm typing this.

  81. I would love to win this book and start baking all of the delicious pies! My favorite pie is apple. I live in an apple producing state and we go crazy for apples in September. Everyone will be baking apple pies!

  82. It really is too hard to pick just one. I recently made the triple berry pie in this book and it was delicious!

  83. Oh- Well right now it is peach pie-- as they peaches are falling ripe from the trees- though this will probably always beat out any other pie in my heart-- I even served Peach Pie at our wedding( well cobbler) but peaches has a special place in my heart and I would love to try as many recipes as possible

  84. There is absolutely no way I can narrow it down to just one! But I do love pecan pie. And apple. And cherry. Oh, and blueberry, too. And pretty much every other kind there is. Except pumpkin. 🙂

  85. Stumbled upon your website last week, and you are my new HERO! I LOVE thrifting!

    Oh, and banana cream pie.

    Thanks!--Eva

  86. My favorite pie is homemade cherry pie, but the best pie I've made was a chocolate ganache tart with fresh raspberries arranged on top, dusted with powdered sugar.

  87. My favorite pie is one my mom used to make to get rid of the abundance of zucchini that grew in my dad's garden. It was a sneaky pie, and I think truthfully that is why it's special to me. It tasted and looked just like an apple pie, but no apples were harmed during the making of this dessert. It was all zucchini.peeled and seeded and sliced thin enough, the veggie soaked up the cinnamon and sugar and took on a while new identity. Like I said, sneaky!
