Scoopable cat litter

It’s been a month and half since I wrapped up Zero Waste Week, and although I am no longer buying the $4.50 half-gallons of glass-bottled milk, I am incorporating some other permanent Zero Waste changes into my life.

As you may recall, I had already made most of the easy changes. I use my own grocery and produce bags when food shopping, I pack school and work lunches in reusable bags and containers; and by only buying used I avoid almost all product packaging.

The easy choices.

But there were a number of thing I planned on buying in bulk when I ran out of their packaged counterparts, one of which was cat litter. Yes I know that there is compostable cedar cat litter, but I went that route once only to be rewarded with secret kitty urine spots which included the back of the coat closet and an upholstered chair.

That was a short experiment.

We’ve been buying Costco clumping litter ever since. However, it comes in a big thick plastic non-recyclable bag, which has always irked me. But when a reader commented about the scoop-your-own litter at Petco I was intrigued to give it a try. Happy to discover that there was a Petco not too far from the house, (I am loathe to drive long distances for a single errand) I pointed the ol’ mini-van to Petco in the name of research. And sure enough, Petco does sell scoop-your-own litter for the packaging adverse. You are required to make a one time purchase of a pre-packaged hard plastic tub of litter, but it then forever refillable.

The cost?

$11.99 for a 30-pound tub of clumping litter, which can later be refilled for $9.99. This ends up costing 2¢ per pound more than the Costco litter, but even I am not that cheap to forgo this packaging-free option.

So far the cats have not put up any protests, although the new litter is mixed in with the old, which should help to ease the transition.

Because peeing throughout my house is not an option. Ever.

The next Zero Waste change will be bulk tea, as I’m still using up the last box-and-a-half of Red Rose tea bags. And I have continued to have New Seasons put all meat purchases into compostable deli containers.

We’re currently putting out around 3/4 of a grocery bag of garbage every other week. Which for a family of four is pretty damned good.

Patrick Stewart Hug

It’s time for another Link-O-Rama Mama, where I lazily link to other people’s well written and thoroughly researched articles.

From The Mouths of Babes

A NY Times Op Ed piece about the current wave of protest against the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, (A.K.A. “food stamps.”) The article is wonderfully opinionated and persuasive!

Sir Patrick Stewart is a God

Fantastic blog piece about how and why Patrick Stewart, (better known as Captain Picard from Star Trek: The Next Generation) advocates against domestic violence and military PTSD. Also, he’s apparently a really good hugger.

Sigh . . .

Awesome Cheap and Gorgeous Interiors

A great photo essay from Country Living magazine iluustrating and explaining how a North Carolina couple redid and furnished their home for next to nothing.

For realz.

Five Frugal Things

by Katy on May 28, 2013 · 27 comments

Here are Five Frugal Things that have flavored my recent days:

  1. I planted cilantro seeds in a thrifted flower pot.
  2. My son gave me a small stack of Papa Murphy’s“Free Cookie Dough” coupons that he scavenged from a Timbers soccer game. His reward has been fresh cookies in his school lunches.
  3. I brought home a mostly full half-gallon of organic milk from one of my mother’s guest cottages today.
  4. I used a fancy-schmancy Coach Leatherware cardboard box to mail an eBay purchase to a customer. It had been left behind in one of my mother’s guest cottages. I ♥ free packing supplies!
  5. I combined a broken and bent vintage lamp with a non-electrified lamp to create one functional lamp.

What frugal things have you been up to?

Goal of The Week

by Katy on May 28, 2013 · 59 comments

My fifteen-year-old son is obsessed with soccer. Playing soccer, watching soccer, soccer paraphernalia, soccer players, soccer cleats; and yes, soccer talk. Endless fascinating soccer talk. Luckily, my husband has a similar, (luckily not completely obsessive) interest in soccer, so he’s able to soak up the majority of our son’s soccer fascination.

Just yesterday my son was talking about how some Portland Timbers player deserved to win Goal of the Week, and it was as if a lightbulb went off inside my head:

Goal. Of. The. Week.

Not a soccer goal, but a personal goal. A single do-able, not overwhelming goal. A concrete goal. A reachable goal. A realistic goal.

Nothing like:

“Learn a second language” or “Clean out basement” or “Put together a comprehensive budget plan.”

Something more along the lines of:

“Clear that one corner of the bedroom” or “List three things on Craigslist” or “Read this one book.”

And so I present to you a new weekly Non-Consumer Advocate feature:

The Goal of The Week!

This goal can be related to frugality, finances, simple living, (which is my favorite vague and wondrous category) or really, anything you want.

My Goal of The Week is influenced by having to work both tomorrow and Thursday, (hence gone from the house from 6:15 A.M. – 8:30 P.M.) so I’m going to keep it small and proclaim my goal to be:

Clear that one corner of my bedroom.

See? It’s been like this for ages, yet I never seem to get around to dealing with it.

Bedroom corner

I’m giving myself until Sunday to declutter and make sense of this corner of my bedroom , and hopefully by keeping the goal reachable, I can avoid getting overwhelmed and mired in the details.

So . . . what’s your Goal of The Week? Please share yours in the comments section below.

How Goodwill Underwear Cheers Me Up

by Katy on May 27, 2013 · 7 comments

The following is a reprint of a previously published post. Enjoy!

I was on my way back from dropping my son off at his life guarding class this morning, when I  started to have a minor anxiety attack. This came complete with waves of nausea and a feeling that maybe I should start hyperventilating.

It wasn’t a good feeling.

I knew I had a ton of stuff to do in the next couple days, so much so that I had no idea where to start. So instead of heading home, I decided that a trip to Goodwill was in order. I’ve been really good about limiting my Goodwill trips, and haven’t set foot in my home away from home for a month or so.

I knew the timing of my day was tight, but frankly, I wasn’t up to facing my adult responsibilities without a little something something for myself.

My heart rate started to beat at a regular rate as soon as the automatic doors swooshed open.

Ahh . . . .

I ended up going to two different Goodwills, and here’s what I bought:

  • A pair of Nike brand basketball shorts for my younger son. They’re very cool and reversible. $2.50
  • A new looking pair of Crocs for my younger son. $3.99
  • A package of brand new Jockey brand underwear, marked $14.99 on the packaging. $2.99

I am fully aware how strange it may seem that I find it relaxing to shop for used underwear, shoes and shorts. Very few women would admit that this is their me time. But I can get a little nutso when I go too many days doing nothing but ferrying kids, cooking, cleaning, hostessing and housekeeping.

And to fully place me back in control of my sensibilities, I pulled the mini-van over to glean a nice big terra cotta flower pot from a free pile on my way home. (Which I promptly filled with compost soil and a handful of hens and chickens.)

I came home feeling somewhat in control of my life again. And all it took was a packet of Goodwill underwear.

Why hello there, you hunk of burning love. Are you feeling shy today?

Elvis

No reason to hide. No one’s going to hurt you.

There now, that wasn’t so bad, was it? I think I saw a pair of blue suede shoes over by all the used sneakers.

Packaged oranges

I write a lot about food waste, and recently I’ve been adding a fair number of posts about zero waste. So naturally I’ve been thinking about how the two are connected.

Buying in bulk (the mainstay of zero waste) means that not only are you avoiding dreaded packaging, but you’re also able to buy precisely the amount of product that you need.

Require two teaspoons of garam masala spice for a recipe? Then scoop exactly that amount from the bulk bins!

And conversely when the grower/manufacturer decides the amount you need to buy, it’s inevitable that you end up with more than you would have intuitively bought. Case in point? The above oranges. (Keep in mind today is Wednesday, so six school lunches have already been prepared.)

Normally I do a big grocery shopping trip at the end of the weekend, but last Sunday was my son’s birthday, and every minute was dedicated to celebrating his fifteen wonderful years on planet earth. And since I worked Monday, my husband took up the slack and hit up our local Safeway. And like all married couples, we do things differently. Examples include:

  • My husband likes to watch soccer on TV, in person and if given the opportunity, through a chip implanted in his brain. I like to watch soccer when my kids are playing. Period. No other times. That’s it. Seriously. So boring.
  • I like make grocery shopping as complicated as possible. I buy toilet paper, wine and dishwasher detergent at Trader Joe’s; kale, lettuce, sale cheese, bulk spices and frozen shrimp at Fred Meyer; milk, eggs and meat at New Seasons; bulk items such as flour, pasta and grains at Winco; bread from the Dave’s Killer Bread outlet store, and so on and so on. My husband likes to buy everything at once from one store and get it the whole damned thing over with as quickly as possible. So yeah, we differ.

Which is how the unnecessarily packaged oranges entered our house. A random amount, not based on how many school lunches we have to make this week, and featuring a single anemic looking yellow-ish orange that’s at risk for drying out before being claimed.

But the offending mesh bag of oranges is just a single example of how packaged food often leads to food waste. Five-pound bags of whole wheat flour go rancid before being used up, large jars of spices lose their flavor and those last two hot dogs grow toxic slime before they can get eaten.

But when you buy in bulk and make a conscious choice about the amount you’re bringing home, then there’s a good chance that you’ll actually eat the food you bought.

Have you noticed that bulk shopping helps you to waste less, or are you guilty of scooping more than you can use? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below.

Today I Am . . .

by Katy on May 21, 2013 · 25 comments

Today I am . . .

  • Completely and utterly exhausted from working yesterday.
  • Happy to have a job.
  • Feeding frozen blood worms to my son’s new teeny tiny frog.
  • Noticing that all of my shoes are either needing repair or are beyond repair.
  • Missing the sunshine that I complained about a few weeks ago.
  • Voting.
  • Home with a sick 17 year old.
  • Walking my ballot to the library.
  • Exhausted.
  • Unlikely to go anywhere and spend any money.

Now you. What are you doing today?

A Quiet Day for Blogging

by Katy on May 17, 2013 · 5 comments

Today I am taking it easy as a blogger. My house needs a couple hours of focused attention, and the Oregon sky just might eke out enough sunshine for a load of laundry.

Have a great Friday!
