Although I really only needed to be in New York City two days last week, I figured it was a huge wasted opportunity to make my free trip so short, so I lengthened the trip to cover Tuesday until Sunday. Of course, The Today Show only paid for a single night in a hotel, but I have a number of New York friends, so scamming a bed was no problem whatsoever. However, mid/late August is a very traditional time for New Yorkers to flee the city for locales both cooler and less stinky.

It meant that even though I had places to stay, I did not have much in the way of company.

However, I lived in New York City from 1988-1990, so I felt very comfortable being on my own. Unfortunately, it means that almost all of my photos are of me, taken by me.

Except when I hung out for a single afternoon with my friend Greta, who is both beautiful and knows which buildings to stand next to:

And like any true friend, she’ll even snap a picture of me posing with celebrities:

But mostly, my photos were like this . . . Katy at Washington Square Park:

Katy at Times Square:

Katy at Rockefeller Center:

Katy at The Metropolitan Museum of Art:

Luckily I had scheduled adult play dates each evening. Like dinner out with the delightful Gretchen Rubin:

And then a dinner with my friend Marie Javins which although undocumented, was still thoroughly enjoyable. (Marie is an incredible blogger, and you should CLICK HERE to see why!)

But the weekend was dedicated wholly to visiting my college friend Jennifer in New Hampshire. But when I went to Penn Station to buy my train ticket, I was presented with the unwelcome news that the train had bafflingly sold out, and the next one didn’t leave until the next day! After a round of deep breathing and frantic phone calls, I decided to purchase a train ticket to Boston, which was leaving in half an hour. (I was unable to get ahold of Jennifer, so I had to just trust that she would be okay with driving 2-1/2 hours to pick me up!) Which is how this photo op presented itself:

Katy in Boston:

Luckily, Jennifer and I share a love of adventurous traveling. (We once spent an entire winter traveling through Mexico and Guatemala and have stories that would make your grandmother faint dead away!) We took advantage of the snafu to bum around downtown Boston and slurp down oysters at Ye Olde Union Oyster House.

Saying goodbye to my dear friend was hard, as we simply do not get to visit enough. You can see it in our eyes here:

I made up for the surprisingly expensive $133 Boston train ticket by slumming it back to New York City on a $30 Greyhound bus. (I sat next to a Polish tourist who became quite snugly when he fell asleep, although it completely  innocent. 😉 )

I actually loved being on my own in New York, as it’s quite freeing to not have to consider anyone’s travel tastes except my own. (I am quite content to walk for hours without any true destination, skip lunches and wander though The Met ignoring important art to then stare too long at lesser pieces.) But it was also great to have dinner dates each and every night.

Alone, but not lonely.

Note: This giveaway has ended. Congratulations to Donna whose comments was randomly chosen to win an autographed copy of Ashley English’s “A Year of Pies.”

HaveI got a treat for you, which is the opportunity to win an autographed copy of Ashley English’s A Year of Pies: A Seasonal Tour of Home Baked Pies. You may remember English as the author of The Homemade Living series that includes Keeping Bees, Canning and Preserving, Home Dairy and Keeping Chickens. Or, you simply might know Ashley English a the author of the blog Small Measure.

Man-O-Shevitz, is this woman prolific!

I had initially been sent a single copy of the book to use as a giveaway, but after ruining the pages with my drool reading the book like a grown-up, I decided that there was no way I was giving this book away, and I would need a separate copy for a giveaway. Although I haven’t baked any of the pies yet, it’s only because I’ve been in New York. Luckily, an extra copy (autographed no less!) arrived during my absence, so I’m finally ready to share my delicious bounty.

This beautiful cookbook is destined to become your go-to resource for all things pie. It’s that good!

To enter to win a copy of A Year of Pies: A Seasonal Tour of Home Baked Pies, just write your favorite kind of pie in the comments section below. I will randomly choose a winner at 9 P.M. Pacific time on Friday, August 31. U.S. residents only, please enter one time only.

Here, I’ll get you started. My favorite pie is homemade blueberry pie. (Unless it’s apple, lemon merengue or coconut cream. 😉 )

Good luck, happy pie baking and a big thank you to Lark Books for mailing out an extra book to one particularly selfish blogger!

Much Enjoyment, Few Souvenirs

by Katy on August 26, 2012 · 18 comments

Today is my last day on the East Coast and by tonight I will back in Portland, Oregon, warm and snug in my own bed. I’ve had an amazing trip visiting with friends Gretchen Rubin, Gretchen M. and Marie Javins in New York; and then hanging out with my college friend Jennifer in Boston and then hanging out with her family in New Hampshire.

And the best part is that I’ve been able to have a freaking blast without buying any souvenirs.

Here’s what I didn’t buy:

  • Maple candy shaped like the state of New Hampshire.
  • A “I ♥ NY” T-shirt.
  • Any licensed sport apparel related to New England Patriots, Boston Red Socks, NY Yankees or NY Mets.
  • A knock-off designer purse from a sketchy guy.
  • A mug from Bubba Gump Shrimp.
  • An Al Roker bobble-head.

Here’s what I did buy:

  • Four used but perfect looking (and clean) 25¢ handkerchiefs from a church thrift shop in Keene, New Hampshire.

Cause that’s now The Non-Consumer Advocate rolls.

Thanks again to The Today Show for inviting me to New York and inadvertently acting as my travel agent.

Yesterday was a pretty exciting day, and not just because this happened:

But also because I got to sit down with the lovely Savannah Guthrie to discuss The Compact and why someone in their right mind would choose to stop buying new. It was a great experience, from filming in Portland under the direction of producer Stephanie Becker and correspondent Kristen Dahlgren; to the morning spent at The Today Show studio. (And yes, I did have Call Me Maybe stuck in my head all. Day. Long.)

To those who missed the segment or simply wish to relive the excitement, you just need to click:

HERE

And for those who want more information, I have a treat, which is an bonus video from the interview I gave at home. Just click:

HERE

I also wrote an essay for The Today Show website, which you can read:

HERE

And from Stephanie Becker, producer extraordinaire, a witty essay about her $12 Emmy gown and her feelings about filming at my house, which can be read:

HERE

I want to extend a huge thank you to everyone at The Today Show who gave me the opportunity to come to New York and talk about my favorite subject.

And I don’t want to give away any spoilers, but I hear there’s a rumor going around that Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte has decided to join The Compact and stop buying new.  Except of course, for his grills. 😉

Welcome to The Non-Consumer Advocate!

by Katy on August 23, 2012 · 39 comments

Welcome to The Non-Consumer Advocate! Sure, you may have been reading this blog since its inception in 2008, but chances are that you just clicked over from my Today Show appearance.

This blog is about frugality and buying less, but it’s so much more than that. I also write about simple living, food waste, environmentalism, happiness, decor, raising kids in this crazy consumer world and a myriad of related topics like my clothesline, which I love with all my heart!

My tagline is “Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without” and I really mean it. I make do with what I already own, and actually work to get rid of more stuff that I bring home.

If you’re looking to read more of The Non-Consumer Advocate, here are a few of my favorite posts:

Frugal in New York City

by Katy on August 22, 2012 · 9 comments

I used to live in New York City, although it was a looong time ago. (1988-1990) So I kind of know the lay of the land, and I kind of know what’s what. (Disclaimer — I know nothing.)

Either way, here I am.

Luckily, I have my friend Greta to stay with, and together she and I are going to hang out in The City and enjoy all that keeps native New Yorkers here in August. (Note — real New Yorkers leave in August because everything is rather hot, smelly and unpleasant.)

As much as I love Portland, I also love exploring other cities. Getting out of my routine and reminding myself that there’s a great big world outside my city limits. (Crazy, but true!)

I’m not sure what we’ll do today, but you can be assured that it will be frugal. (Note — might be pricey.)

Five things that are making me happy:
  1. I am flying to New York today to appear on Thursday’s Today Show. (You know, of course, barring real news.) I get to visit with my dear friend Greta for two days, and then I get to take the train up to New Hampshire and stay a couple days with my friend Jennifer.
  2. When I walked down to Powell’s last night, they had three of the four Catwings books in stock. I bought them all for Greta’s son Beckett. And yes, I bought them new. But I do have a Compact exception for books written by friends.
  3. I had enough Powell’s credit to get the books for free. This was leftover from hauling in a box of books for credit that I had found in a free pile a few months ago.
  4. I have a review copy of Gretchen Rubin’s new book Happier at Home to read on the airplane.
  5. I have two giveaway copies of Happier at Home that I will later share with Non-Consumer Advocate community!
One thing that’s pissing me off:
  1. I think my cats killed a rat in the basement. There’s dried blood at the bottom of the stairs and an awful smell next to the washing machine. However I haven’t been able to find the source of the stench yet.

Now you. What’s making you happy and conversely what’s pissing you off?

Ever since I saw these Urban Outfitters curtain tie-backs on Pinterest, I’ve wanted to try making my own.

See? So pretty!

I already had a set of thrifted glass doorknobs, and was lucky to find a pair of ornate round backplates at a vintage hardware shop in my neighborhood. (I wrote HERE about the first half of the project.) And yesterday, I finally completed the last steps and got them installed.

Don’t they look awesome?!

Clothed:

Naked:

Fully dressed:

And since we’re on the subject of DIY projects, I wanted to share a little makeover project that took over my yesterday. I recently bought a sweet $30 antique dresser at Goodwill. I scrubbed down the exterior with some Murphy Oil Soap, (the exterior was weirdly sticky) but the dated drawer pulls needed to go. However, it was not in the budget to replace them.

See? Not so pretty:

Do you like my solution for how to position the knobs so they sit upright for the painting process? It’s a styrofoam meat tray from my to-be-recycled stash with poked holes for the knobs.

Me be clever.

And here’s after four light coats of Krylon Oil Rubbed Bronze spray paint:

And here we have the painted knobs in situ, all fresh and updated:

And here’s the dresser, all scrubbed down with the new drawer pulls in place:

Sorry there was no before picture of the dresser, but my camera was hiding at the time.

I do love me a project!

Update: I was bale to quickly sell this dresser for $100, which I used as my spending money for my Today Show/NYC trip!

As much as I promote the idea of a uncluttered home, I’m just as bad as anyone else when it comes to bringing home new Stuff. Sure, I may be a pile or two (or seventy) away from being featured on Hoarders, but I still have a category of Stuff that sneaks past my resolve to minimize new possessions.

And that would be a tasty vintage lamp.

And not just any vintage lamp will do, as I like ’em old and I like ’em made from specific natural materials. So marble, glass and wood are in. Plastic, brass and ceramic are out. (It’s not that I don’t like ceramic lamps, it’s just that none of them seem to ever come home with me.)

It’s safe to say that my house is well lit.

I would like to introduce you to a new family member, whose marble base and stacked chunky leaded glass pieces melted my heart and followed me home from Goodwill. (After I got them to lower the price from $6.99 to $4.99.)

Yes, I’ll be rewiring her, (which is why they lowered the price) but her sweet sparkly elegance could not be resisted. I think I’ll call her Crystal.

And since there’s a new member to my household, I thought it was high time to introduce you to the rest of my family.

There’s the twins, Flora and Dora. These candlestick alabaster lamps originally belonged to my great grandparents, and were spelunked from my mother’s basement. They enjoy spending time on our bedside tables. (Spelunked lamps — $0.)

And then there’s Woody-San, whose lacquered wooden base evokes a time when faux-Asian was all the rage. (Maybe 1920’s?) His swirly paint is so deliciously random yet deliberate all at once. (Goodwill — $6.99.)

Let’s not forget Victoria, whose upright and elegant posture can always be counted on. She weighs a ton, but her fussy lampshade balances out any figure flaws. (Goodwill — $2.99.)

You already know this lamp, whose curves evoke a time when a chrome bumper was a thing of beauty. I think I’ll call him Vinnie. (Goodwill — $2.99.)

And then there’s Victoria’s younger sister Imogen, whose alabaster elegance welcomes all who enter my home. (Estate sale — $15.)

It’s important that I not forget Jimmy Hoffa, who was found in the basement of an old rental house. His wiry industrial armature mean he can never be broken. (Found lamp — $0.)

I must not leave out Trixie-Lou, whose overly pink and ornate lines have put her most at risk for replacement. For this reason, she kind of hates her sister Crystal. (Goodwill — $4.99?)

So yes, I might have a lamp problem. Some might go so far as to say I’m the Angelina Jolie of the lamp world, but I somehow just can’t resist bringing home these poor defenseless lamps.

Someone has to give them a good home.

Today Show!

by Katy on August 16, 2012 · 42 comments

Update: It looks like my segment is going to be Thursday, not Monday! I’ll keep ya’ll posted as changes occur!

By the way, I’m flying out to New York to be on The Today Show. We shot the segment last Thursday, and I’ll answer questions about it this coming Monday, the 20th. (I may seem matter of fact about this, but in truth I’m bouncing off the ceiling.)

And in case you’re overwhelmed with feelings of how glamorous my life is, here I am hanging out in the Goodwill used shoes section with Today Show’s Kristen Dahlgren.
